Quiz of the Week

22nd May 2002
Black is a pawn up but behind in development.
What is his best move?

a) Ng4 - f6 Retreating the threatened knight to a safe square 4 points
b) Ng4 - e5 Retreating the threatened knight to a safe square 4 points
c) Ng4 - h6 Retreating the threatened knight, but to teh edge of the board 2 points
d) Ng4 x f2 Giving up the knight for little in return 1 point
e) Bf8 - c5 Leaving theknight to be taken 1 point
f) Nc6 - e5 counter attacking and so saving the knight 4 points

However, the bets move for black is none of the above, but Nc6 - d4 (6 above was meant to be this!) threatening the queen. The point being that Nxd4 allows Qh2 mate. Q moves allows Nxf3+ and the Qh2 mate. So white has to play hxg3, losing the queen for 2 knights.
