Quiz of the Week

23rd January 2002

Black has a 'rook on the 7th' , and White's king is trapped
Which of the listed moves for Black is best?
3 points for correct answers returned on 30th January
SOLUTION

a) Rb8 - b2 Doubling Rooks on the seventh is often good. But in this case white can force a 'back rank mate' with Ra8+ 0 points
b) Be6 - h3+ A check is a check and in this case forces the king to move but there is no immediate follow up 1 point
c) Be6 - c4+ The nasty check. The obvious Rxc4 allows Rb1+ leading to a 'lawn mower' mate. Not taking the bishop, though, loses the rook. 3 points.
d) h7 - h6 The gentle approach - avoid the risk of back rank mate, preparing Rb8-b2 and possible Bh3+1 point
