Chess Challenge 2003
Of the record number of 27 members who qualified for the Surrey Megafinal,
nine qualified for the national Gigafinal. In the end only 5 made the
long journey to Keele, but they all played well, their scores being: 4/6
Charlotte West and Nathan Heal; 3.5/6 Becky O'Neill; 3/6 George West and
Alex Niemira. In view of the strength of the competition at the Gigafinal
these were all very good scores

Sunday
11th May 2003 National
Girls Team Championships in New Malden
In this event we had a team of 4 girls in the under 9 section (year 4
and below) though all 4 of our players were from year 3. In the first
round we had 1 win, 2 draws and a loss, and our score of 2/4 put us half
way down. In the next round we had our best score, of 3.5 points and were
suddenly in second place. In each of the last two rounds we scored 2/4
to end up with 9.5/16 for a very creditable 4th place. Since we can have
the same team next year we hope to win some medals then. We also hope
to enter other teams. Individual scores (from 4 games)
1. Caroline Foster 1½
2. Ruth Cooper 1½
3. Bethany Nicholls 3
4. Charlotte West 3½
